This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Sophia Yvette: 0:10

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a professional home decorator? Well, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Megan Arimanda, with her company Expressive Aesthetics. Megan, how are you today? I'm doing great. Thank you for having me. It is a pleasure to have you on and we're excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you tell us a bit about your company, Sure?

Megan Arimanda: 0:42

So my business is called Expressive Aesthetics and I offer professional organizing and home decorating. So we offer services like design consultations to discover your personal interior style, space planning, decluttering, furniture and decor recommendations, personal shopping and, of course, that final step of installing everything in styling so that your home is beautiful and ready to live in. So our process focuses on bringing out your personality in your home, whether that be in custom organizing solutions that work for your unique lifestyle or in the furniture and decor we choose for you. So I believe that everything we choose to display in our homes is an opportunity for self-expression, so I place a lot of importance in helping clients find their personal style and reach their aspirational goals. That's what makes us different than other professional organizers and decorators.

Sophia Yvette: 1:43

Love it. So, Megan, how did you get into this business and how did you come up with the idea for Expressive Aesthetics?

Megan Arimanda: 1:53

So I actually studied marketing in college, but I struggled to find some personal meaning in it and I wanted to do something where I could see the impact of my work. So, and also, I was a fashion stylist for many years, so I craved that creativity. So actually four years ago, after I graduated college, I just came across an assistant organizing position and that's where my journey started. I was excited to start this career path because it has that creative element of space planning and a bit of interior design, and I think it also speaks to my natural organizing and communication skills. I think in this industry it's really important to be able to mentor others, but also being empathetic when guiding them through those difficult decisions. And so since then, I've worked for many organizing companies and I've learned to adapt and amaze clients of all needs. And so, with my own business, I'm really excited to intersect my passion for organizing with my home of home decor.

Sophia Yvette: 3:05

So, Megan, with such an all-encompassing company, what is the most common myth or misconception you typically come across in your industry?

Megan Arimanda: 3:16

Yeah, so I was thinking about it and I think the one I want to talk about today is that hiring a professional organizer or home decorator is a luxury, and I do agree to some extent. It is a luxury over everyday essentials, but loving your home and feeling at peace in your home is something everyone should get to feel. For example, organizing is an investment in your family and state of mind. Going through the process with a professional truly changes your relationship with stuff and the way you spend your money, and that's something you'll take throughout the rest of your life.

Sophia Yvette: 3:58

And so who are your target clients? And, in terms of marketing, having that background, how do you stay attractive to them?

Megan Arimanda: 4:07

So, for me, my target customers are really anyone in the Dallas-Fort Worth, texas, area who feels overwhelmed by the clutter in their home or feels that something is missing or just not quite right about the look of their home, and I understand. When it comes to organizing and tidying up, even I struggle with my problem areas. I think all we need is a little help, so my goal is to teach others the importance of having functional systems in their home that are not only easy to maintain but also beautiful to look at and live in. I also want to spread the message that everyone deserves a home that speaks to them personally and is a joy to share with others. I do this through my blog on my website, and my goal for this year is to do speaking events at community centers and schools to further spread that message.

Sophia Yvette: 5:01

Well, that is really awesome. And outside of work, what do you like to do for fun when you're not making homes beautiful?

Megan Arimanda: 5:12

So, outside of my business, I love spending class and hanging out with my girlfriends and, of course, I am a creative person at heart, so I'm always looking for creative hobbies. Right now, I'm doing a little bit of painting and trying to learn how to crochet. Actually, one of my favorite pastimes is cutting up pictures from magazines and creating mood boards, and I recommend it to everyone. Even if you don't think you're creative, it's a fun, easy craft to start.

Sophia Yvette: 5:46

I agree, and just to speak to that a little more, I think those mood boards or vision boards really help you to stay on track with where you're trying to go to really visualize the goal. Yes, definitely. Now let's go ahead and switch gears for a second. Can you describe a hardship or life challenge you overcame and how it made you a better and stronger woman today? What comes to mind for you?

Megan Arimanda: 6:16

I would have to say, although this is not a single event or experience, I would say, finding my confidence and my identity in my early 20s.

Megan Arimanda: 6:30

It's still a lifelong journey. But at the time I didn't see myself going down the marketing path, and so I felt a bit lost and down on myself. I did a lot of odd jobs in pursuit of finding something that called to me, and even that assistant organizing position was something I felt pretty unsure about at first, and so, just dealing with those feelings, I kind of forgot the things that I have accomplished, the things that made me unique. So slowly, through my support system, I was able to shut down that voice and instead focus what was in front of me, like things that I can't question, for example, all of the happy clients I'd been helping, and so through that I was able to remind myself of what I'm good at, what makes me unique, and, ultimately, the question of what drives me. And so that's what took me to creating my own business, because home organizing is something that I love to do, I love helping people, and then I really would like to intersect that with home decor and just make people love their homes.

Sophia Yvette: 8:03

I have to ask you, since drive is such an intrinsic part of who we are. What is that thing that gets you up every morning?

Megan Arimanda: 8:05

I would say for me, it's getting excited about making someone else happy, because I realize throughout the years that's what makes me happy, like seeing the impact that I bring on other people, the things that I can personally do to make someone else smile. Even if it's something small like, for example, it's a day that I'm not doing organizing or decorating there are things that I can do and it's makes me happy throughout the day and I can look back on it.

Sophia Yvette: 8:46

And how can our listeners learn more about Expressive Aesthetics?

Megan Arimanda: 8:52

So I want listeners to know that I'm here to help in any way I can. No matter how big or small the project is, I'm excited to help. So, even if you're on the fence about hiring a professional, let's have a discussion where you can tell me what's not working in your home and let's just pick my brain for solutions. That's why I always offer free consultations and you can book a consultation on my website, expressiveaesthetics.com, and fill out the contact form or email me at megan@expressiveaesthetics.com, and we'll start the journey to loving your home there.

Sophia Yvette: 9:32
